Equality through Storytelling
Stories are powerful tools that build empathy and understanding. Whether illuminating the effects of development through hip hop or encouraging curiosity in the young leaders of tomorrow, this power is the reason stories are at the heart of everything I do.
A Brief History
With a name like Lorien (which yes, comes directly from Lothlórien in J.R.R. Tolken’s The Hobbit), it is little wonder that stories have been a central part of my journey. I grew up in the midwestern United States during the 1980s, where, like many biracial children, I was fascinated by the concept of race. My search for answers about myself led me to explore my cultural history, initially through the memoirs and autobiographies of other Black and biracial people.
What struck me most about these stories was how each one felt simultaneously familiar and unique. They enabled me to learn so much about the world around me, while at the same time developing a stronger understanding of myself. This power of story eventually led me to study it professionally in many forms, including film, art, television, music, and social media. Today, I use this knowledge to promote and expand equality, which I champion everyday, one story at a time.
